Always Listen for Noises

Any irregular noises you hear when starting a car are warning sounds that something is wrong with the engine. Telling a mechanic about the sounds or vibrations by imitating them is often difficult. To make things a little easier we've pulled together a list of some noises you might hear and what they could mean.

Clicking, rhythmic, high-pitched metallic tapping, could indicate a loose hubcap; defective wheel bearing; bent or loose fan blade; low oil level in engine loose manifold heat-control valve.

Clunking, or dull thumping, could possibly be a worn universal joint or rear differential; transmission fluid may be low.

Heavy Pounding, or loud knocking, could be caused by worn crankshaft main bearing, bad connecting rod or loose bolts in torque converter.

Pinging, or high-pitched knocking, means your car may be in need of tune-up, or octane of fuel may be too low for the engine.

Schreeching, or the sound of scraping metal, indicates a possible brake problem.

Squeaking, or high-pitched rubbing sound, comes from worn drum-brake linings, chassis needs lubrication, worn suspension bushing.

Squealings, or high-pitched whine, usually be underinflated tires, misaligned wheels, loose or worn power steering, fan, or air conditioning compressor belt.

Thudding, or low, metallic thumping sounds, could be caused by a loose pulley, worn crankshaft bearin, or loose exhaust pipe.
